Navigating the Minefields of Sustainability Standards Reporting

Globally, biofuel producers are faced with a growing list of GHG emission reduction standards to comply with, such as the U.S. E.P.A. Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS2), the Canadian Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) and the Renewable Energy Directive (RED) in Europe, to name a few. In the U.S., state specific GHG reduction standards such as the California Low Carbon Fuel Standard are in place, while other states such as Washington and Oregon are in the process of developing similar standards.

Fuel producers must deal with a range of certification processes to achieve compliance with the aforementioned standards. Compliance is measured by calculating the Carbon Intensity (CI) score of the fuel and measuring against a baseline. A wide range of software and compliance tools are available to producers to determine the CI score under each standard; however, the underlying data required for each is the same. Obtaining an LCFS, RFS2, RED or Canadian CI score (but not certification) is as easy as data entry into one user interface.
